Flying Pie Pizzeria

There may not be a kid alive who doesn’t like pizza; it’s also a popular choice for most adults as well. Pizza is one of those things that is just plain hard to mess up—yet equally difficult to do well. Let’s face it…pizza is pizza. Until you find that special pizza joint that does it just right. In Portland, Oregon, one such place is Flying Pie Pizzeria.

There are four locations in Portland, but our family prefers the location on Stark Street. Maybe it’s the fact that it seems like a cozy hole-in-the wall, maybe it’s because they have the best beer selection, maybe it’s because they boast the best board games, or maybe it’s because it’s easiest to see the chefs toss the pizza crusts in the air.

Yes, Flying Pie takes its name from the fact that the dough is hand tossed and flies through the air before it’s topped with delicious and fresh toppings and popped in the oven. It’s a unique experience that offers a glimpse into the culinary past of my parent’s generation. Watching food prepared in this manner seems to make it taste a little better. After all, handmade and homegrown is what Portland, Oregon is all about.

We took the family there on Saturday. As my wife grabbed a booth seat, I ordered a specialty pizza: ham, pineapple, sausage and artichoke hearts, on thin crust with extra cheese and sauce. I also grabbed a couple pints of beer for the Mrs. and me and purchased four salad plates for the scrumptious salad bar.

We each made our way through the salad bar and then the kids picked out a game from the front desk. Scrabble. My kids and wife playing me…at a word game. I tried to be gentle and not make too many unpronounceable words, but I failed. Like my family, I’m hyper-competitive and find it difficult not to try my hardest at something.

Right about the time I was winning, and polishing off my salad and my frosty beverage, the pizza was ready. My wife grabbed it and set it on the table. We consumed it with ferocity. Each ingredient was fresh and invigorating. This wasn’t stale, run of the mill pizza. This was Portland eating at its finest—refined but not stuffy; fresh but not pungent; fun but not silly; and smart but not standoffish. This was Flying Pie Pizzeria and it’s a place you can come to over and over again and discover something new each time.

If you’ve never been here before, it’s time. There are four locations lying on each corner of the city: Milwaukie, Lake Oswego, Portland, and Gresham. The one at the Stark location can be found in the Montavilla neighborhood at 7804 SE Stark Street in Portland, Oregon.
